This project updates and replaces the three-volume Catalogue of Jahandiez & Maire (1931—1934) and its later Supplément by Emberger & Maire (1941), all now long out-of-print.

This Darwin Initiative for the Survival of Species project has been carried out by taking the names of Moroccan vascular plants held in a series of databases, merging them together and evaluating all the names in a cleaning-up process.

The basic set of names came from those collected in Morocco over the years by expeditions from the The University of Reading in conjunction with staff of the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II. These are held in the herbarium RNG database and in Morocco in BRAHMS (Botanical Research and Herbarium Management System) created by Dr Denis Filer of The University of Oxford (www.Brahms.co.uk). To this dataset, the names of the rare, threatened and endemic plants enumerated by Fennane & Ibn Tattou (1998) in their Catalogue des plantes Vasculaires rares, menaces ou endemique du Maroc have been added. This work was undertaken by Mr Abdellatif Ennasser of Casablanca and a recent MSc graduate of the IAV Hassan II.

A third major dataset of all plant names recorded in the Euro+Med PlantBase in the Pandora system as occurring in Morocco were then exported and merged with these. The plant names and synonyms for the non-European territories of Euro+Med PlantBase, an EU-sponsored project, are based on the three (of a proposed six) volumes of MedChecklist (Greuter, Burdet & Long, 1984—1989). To these have been added the additional accepted names in the following works, where the families are not covered by MedChecklist or when they were published after MedChecklist: Jahandiez & Maire (1931—1934), Emberger & Maire (1941), Sauvage & Vindt (1952—1954), Maire, R. (1952—1987), Quèzel (1959), Nègre (1961—1962), Ozenda (1977) and Fennane et al. (1999).

To these merged data, Mr Hassan Rankou has added further names from the recently published N Moroccan Checklist by Valdés, Rejdali, Achhal, Jury & Montserrat (2002) and the works by Dobignard (1993), Dobignard, Jacquemoud & Jordan (1992 & 1992), Dobignard & Jordan (1987, 1989 & 1997) and Förther & Podlech (2001, 2002). The series of notas by Gómiz García (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003) have also been included. The published notes pertaining to the Valdés et al. Checklist (Valdés, 1996) are all taken into account via the published volumes.

The work was ‘cleaned-up’ using a series of taxonomic monographs, recent Floras and the Mauritanian catalogue by Lebrun (1998) and the considerable expertise built up by one of us (RWR) in the Reading herbarium.

We believe that there are 4532 accepted species in the Moroccan Flora. There are 1269 accepted subspecies. The database currently contains 3392 synonyms. These figures will no doubt be revised as we continue our work.
