| This is an important endemic
species, clearly related to Abies pinsapo Boiss.
from southern Spain. Abies maroccana occurs only
in one small calcareous mountainous area in the Rif
near Chefchaouène, 1200-2100 m. It has been treated
taxonomically as a subspecies (Abies pinsapo
subsp. maroccana (Trab.) Emb. & Maire) and as a
variety (Abies pinsapo var. maroccana Cebattos &
Martin Bolanos). However, this removes Moroccan and
Spanish (as well as African and European) endemics fro
lists of species for protection. The taxonomy is in
urgent need of clarification. It is regarded as a rare
endemic in the Moroccan red data book (Fennane &
Ibn Tattou 1998).
